In this episode of the Int-HER-rupt podcast, host Linda Yates has a conversation with Sabine Gedeon, the founder of She Leads Network and host of the podcast She Leads Now. Gedeon’s career journey and her years of experience helping others grow and develop have taught her what it takes to break through mental limits, find confidence, and orient your life around becoming who you want to be.

If You’ve Just Been Let Go

  • “This is not your company.” Remember that you don’t own the organization. You own your career and you get to strategize about it.
  • Choose your next role based on goals you have, not just matching your skillset and finding something “good enough”.
  • When you orient yourself around your goals, you no longer need the organization to be a part of your identity. The organization gets the gift of you.

How to Turn Things Around

  • Create a Brag Book. Think about your various accomplishments over the years. As you’re remembering the projects you’ve worked on and the impacts you have had, you transition yourself out of a victim mentality and into knowing who you are and what gifts you have to offer.
  • Look at your Brag Book and look for the running themes. Are there items or motivations that seem to be recurring? Identify the passions and goals that show up for you and go into the market looking for jobs that bring your skills together with your goals.

When Should You Pivot?

  • If you hear a little voice inside telling you it’s time to go, it’s time to go. A role might check a lot of boxes for you, but that doesn’t make it right.
  • When you hold onto your role even after it is not serving you, you run the risk of losing touch with parts of yourself.
  • Gedeon asks herself “Who am I?” at pivotal moments to assess whether the person she wants to be has the space to flourish in her life.

“The things that helped me push past the fear and tap into my ‘well of courage’ is I had to ask myself the question, ‘Who am I?’ I’ve had to ask this question many times in many different situations, and I challenge clients to do it as well. When you can sit back and you can really assess and ask yourself that question, and be honest and vulnerable with yourself, it forces you to say: ‘If this is who I am, let me look at my external. Let me look at the work that I’m doing, the relationships, the activity. Do they reflect back to me who it is I believe that I am at this stage in my life?’” – Sabine Gedeon
