Everyone has days when they look at big projects and want to give up. When those moments arise, we need a plan to help us get back on track for success. In this episode of the Int-HER-rupt podcast, our host Linda Yates speaks with her longtime friend, Beverly Cordner. They discuss the meaning of perseverance, tips for pressing on through difficulty, and the times when we must let go.

What is Perseverance?

  • Definition: commitment to completing a goal despite any delay or difficulty in achieving success.

  • In the past, Cordner was asked to manage a project that brought many people and ideas together – it ended up taking 6 years!

3 Tips for Persevering Despite Challenges

  1. When projects become too big and unwieldy, split the project into manageable pieces. Define success by completing each step.

  2. Make sure you have the right people on the project. Find forward-thinking people AND people who play devil’s advocate!

  3. Make sure communication on the project is happening between different people or groups.

When Should You Let Go/Pivot?

  • You may have to put the project on hold because you’re waiting on resources or direction.

  • You may have to stop the project entirely. This may be because the project is ended by someone else or you realize you’re unable to continue.

“One of the ways in which we overcome interruptions is we limit interruptions to a certain time frame. We let interrupters know that we only have a certain time in which we can be truly interrupted on the project and there will be other times when we can talk more on the things that [they] want to talk about.” – Beverly Cordner
